CLIENT:

State Airports Authority of Turkey, (DHMI)

AREA:

90.000sqm.

ABOUT PROJECT:

Competition 1999/ Prize winner

DESCRIPTION:

GMWM's prize winning competition entry was based on a composition similar to that of Istanbul Atatürk Airport. A simple and transparent building form is proposed to achieve a light and airy interior, and clear orientation of passengers. Entered from an elevated road, departures level is roofed over with a large flat deck, strengthened by a series of 'folds' at the centre and rising gently towards its two cantilevering edges. Formed by tapering triangular trusses at 16m centres, the 'folds' are glazed externally to provide the spacious interior with diffused rays of daylight.
